Füssen in winter
Situated at the foothills of the Ammergau Alps and directly on the rushing Lech river, picturesque Füssen is also enchanting in winter.
A White Winter Wonderland
Füssen also has a lot to offer in winter. How about a romantic sleigh ride to the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, or an idyllic ski hike on the Tegelberg, cozy hut magic in the Ammergau Alps, traditional Christmas markets in Füssen or the surrounding Alpine villages. Here are some highlights for a sporty or relaxing short break in the wintry Allgäu.
The medieval town at the foot of the Alps
The time-honored town has a long history, as evidenced by the historic old town, magnificent churches, medieval house facades and a well-preserved historic town wall. Numerous museums also tell of the more than 700-year history of the town, which impresses with its cultural diversity and warm hospitality.
Winter sports around Füssen
Füssen is considered the cradle of German ice hockey, so ice skating, figure skating, curling and, of course, ice hockey are among the must-do leisure activities.
Fans of alpine and nordic skiing will also find excellent conditions here. Five ski areas in the immediate vicinity offer cable cars and lifts on slopes of all levels of difficulty. The winter sports arena on the nearby Tegelberg is ideal for snowboarders and freestylers. The pistes and ski tours offering in Pfronten / Breitenberg or in Nesselwang with the Alpspitzbahn invite you to enjoy challenging descents and cosy après-ski events. While the ski areas in the nearby Austrian Reutte or in Nesselwängle/Tennenberg will delight you with natural snow and floodlit descents at night.
Enjoying the Allgäu nature
The 25 kilometers of trails in Füssen are among the top regions for cross-country skiers - and not just because Neuschwanstein Castle forms the picturesque backdrop. The groomed trails can be used in classic and skating style and are connected to the trail networks in Hopfen am See or Weißensee.
Not quite as sporty but all the more relaxing are winter hikes through the surrounding forests or simply a walk along the shores of Lake Forggensee. But a romantic sleigh ride through the snow-covered Allgäu countryside up to King Ludwigs Neuschwanstein Castle is as idyllic as it gets.
Musicals & Christmas Markets
The Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein in Füssen is bringing one of Germany's most successful Christmas musicals to the stage during the “Advent season”. “The Ghost of Christmas”, based on the Christmas story “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, is a musical for the whole family and tells the magical tale of the miserly pawnbroker Ebenezer Scrooge, who receives a strange visit on Christmas Eve. Tickets for the 25 performances from November 22 - December 29, 2024, Thursdays to Sundays , can be booked at www.das-festspielhaus.de/der-geist-der-weihnacht/.
And the obligatory Christmas markets in Füssen and the neighboring villages are the crowning glory of the pre-Christmas season. Here you can buy small gifts, taste regional delicacies, buy Christmas tree decorations and other handicrafts. The markets take place on the 2nd and 3rd weekend of Advent.
